MADD's real agenda
is apparent. The cause is a worthy one, no one condones drunk
driving. But the laws should not reach the level of unfairness that
they are at especially with MADD lobbying lies to politicians. They
provide incorrect statistics to achieve their agenda. Politicians
have created a very lucrative and powerful industry w/ all of the current
extreme DUI laws relating to low
BAC's.
Again, no one is for
drunk driving. It's just wrong to punish someone to the extreme
levels that the current laws mandate for an act that does not cause any
public hazard. The real statistics are no where near what MADD makes
it out to be. They lie to achieve the political action that they
want. It is a shame that they have lost loved ones but blaming
innocent people is hardly the answer to anything. It's like blaming
anyone who has ever carried a gun for a killing that involved a gun.
How much sense does that make?
The real
statistics are:
Since
1996 the percentage of motor vehicle fatalities involving alcohol with a
BAC of 0.10% or less has steadily fallen. And in 1996 that
percentage was 8.9%, let us repeat that; that means that 91.1% of all
fatal motor vehicle accidents involved people with NO MEASURABLE BLOOD
ALCOHOL LEVEL. And that percentage has steadily decreased since
1996!! Why is the BAC level 0.08? A level that has
statistically been proven to cause less fatal crashes than no alcohol at
all! It's because of MADD's lobbying, not because it curbs drunk
driving or saves any lives.
MADD
also lobbied to define the term alcohol related accident. The
federal government, as a direct result of MADD lobbying, now classifies an
alcohol related accident as one that involves any alcohol in ANY person
involved in the accident regardless of who causes the accident. This
includes pedestrians, witnesses, etc... So a sober person could
crash and hit another car and that car could have a passenger with some
measurable amount of alcohol in their system and then it is considered an
alcohol related accident for statistical purposes.
These are just the
tip of the iceberg and it only gets worse. MADD as an organization
has their own agenda and its a shame that their agenda involves
criminalizing innocent people.
