If you are convicted of a DWI in Washington DC, your driver’s license will be suspended or revoked. In order to get your driving privileges reinstated, you will need to provide proof of financial responsibility in the form of an SR22 filing.
An SR22 form is a simple certificate that your insurance company files with the DMV. It proves that you are in fact insured for the minimum liability amounts:
You will need to maintain your SR22 insurance for a period of three years. If your policy lapses during that three-year period, your insurance company is required to notify the DMV.
SR22 insurance is considered a high-risk insurance and the rates can be steep. Still, some insurance companies do offer competitive rates. You can compare some of those here:
In the District of Columbia, if your driver’s license has been revoked because of a second or subsequent DWI, you may be able to shorten your revocation period by one year if you participate in DC’s ignition interlock program.
An ignition interlock device (IID) is a small electro-mechanical unit that is installed on a vehicle’s dashboard. In order to start the vehicle, a driver must blow into the mouthpiece of the IID. The vehicle will not start unless the IID determines that the driver has not been drinking. Many studies have indicated that ignition interlock devices prevent repeat DWI offenses.
The IID records any failed breath test as well as any refusal to provide a breath sample. It also records when the vehicle is started and when it is turned off, making it simple for the DMV to analyze a driver’s activities. And of course, the device makes note of any attempt at tampering. All of this information can be downloaded for the authorities.
In order to participate in DC’s ignition interlock program, you must satisfy all the other conditions for reinstatement (including paying the $98 reinstatement fee) and you must install an approved ignition interlock device in any vehicle that you drive. This will earn you a restricted driver’s license for one year.
